Feeling Thankful?

By Sheila Barnett

Psalm 107:1  “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Thanksgiving Day, 2020, promises to be quite unique for many people. Usually a time of gathering with family and friends, this year finds individuals in quarantine and families canceling travel plans.

The difficult question for this Thanksgiving might be, “What do we have to be thankful for?” We are living with a pandemic in a country that is hurting, divided, and in desperate need of healing.

Through all of this we can give thanks for Jesus, our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. (Psalm 68:19) We can trust in His goodness, find hope in His faithfulness, and rest in His everlasting, never-changing love. We can be thankful for our God who has promised to never leave us or forsake us. (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 13:5)

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul’s instructions to the church in Thessalonica include these powefrul words:  “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” On our own, it seems impossible to feel thankful in all circumstances. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can join the author of Psalm 107 and give thanks to the Lord – no matter what.

Dear Lord, Thank you for your constant love and care.  Please help me to be thankful during the good times and the bad times.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen
